Cold war, 1947-91: more of a process than a single event, came about after ww2 and still has an impact on today"s world. Ww2 spurned the end of the european colonialism: most of the battles done on colonial territory, colonial people contributed to the war (patriotic non-citizens) soldiers. british colonialism ended with peaceful negotiations, no resistance. us and vietnam in an anti-communist war, which was really an independence war. portugal didn"t participate in ww2 so it didn"t want to pull out of its colonies. >> independence movements started gaining momentum around the 1960s. Note: the big 5 arms producers are: us, ussr, france, uk and later china. Angola, korea, vietnam, sri lanka, mozambique, greece, namibia, congo, etc. countries where independence wars were fought as proxy wars. Conflict rampant around the world between or within 3rd world countries, conflicts prolonged and supported by the western/eastern powers in their hoped to grab territory for their economic sphere of influence.
