Document Summary

Anxiety, sleep disruption, and a lot of concern for a whole range of activities are associated with stress. These are all part of the stress response. We can also talk about things that moderate stress, i. e. those that intervene and decrease the extent of the stress response. Chronic stress is a prolonged ght-or- ight response. Stress response: the physiological changes that occur when you experience a stressor. It is a complex network of nerve signalling and hormonal messaging which activates some physiological processes and suppresses others. It is a way in which individuals regulate their physiology in response to daily activities and environmental conditions. Stressor: anything that activates/elicits a stress responses (usually threats to survival or reproduction). From an evolutionary standpoint, these are perceived in some way to intervene with survival, i. e. ght-or- ight response. We will respond to stress the same way no matter the stressor but what changes is the length.
