Document Summary

Mind = formed by language and culture you are surrounded by/involved in. Chomsky: language = part of abstract coding in mind; universal grammar. In non-alphabet using culture, there is no such thing as dyslexia. Core vocabulary: exists in every language (i. e. mother); universal concepts. Not necessarily named in the same way. No such thing as universal vocabulary - all perceptive. Concepts = universal but they are not named in the same way. Cognates: related words - same roots/linguistic derivation. Lexicon: more precise; nothing wrong in lexicon. Language comes from below; literacy comes from above. Doublets: i. e. japanese - language and gender differentiation. Choice of words (same meaning, different words) reveal gender, age. We give roles to different genders -> different language. Languages are not rigid, they are dynamic (i. e. pronouns: he/she -> they) Deficit approach: assumes adult male language = standard - grammar = male-based. Dominance approach: women"s speech = subordinate due to patriarchy.
