ANT253H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Stylometry, Formal Wear, Basil Bernstein
Document Summary
Makes you fit in intentionally into a locale/social situation. I. e. don"t wear formal wear at mcdonald"s. Writing style - placement of subject (i. e. subject recedes into the background) I. e. when writing a formal essay: passive - remove subjectivity (remove i -> move person in the background to keep research in the forefront) - objective. When learning new language - hardest to know which style to use according to the situation. Break style -> make political or social statement. Style allows you to identify potentially who the maker of the text is. Stylometry: measures the kinds of words, structures, habits that we have but are not aware of as our personal style - also used in forensic linguistics to try to identify who left a murder note etc. Register: going up and down a scale to negotiate conversation, but style = classifications to allow conversation to occur.
