9/10/2013 2:55:00 PM ANT253 LECTURE 1 - midterm textbook that’s it - relation btwn language and the world which we live in - 3 tests t/f multiple choice 1 LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS - sound evokes object we are unaware - Lingusitics= science that studies language, came about in 1800, before this is the physical sciences. There is speculation of science but not a scientific approach. - An explanation is theory 2 WHAT IS LANGUAGE - allows us to communicate and think. No one knows what it is - *presents things through a sound or through a mark that tells us what it is, but whatever is there is not there. It displaces it. You uses your senses - It allows us to evaluate future discourse 3 SIGN SYSTEM:RED - sign system is something that stands for something else - ie holds up 2 fingers- your brain is programmed to see these as signs as something standing for something else like victory - every word has history behind it - ie SIGN red: if you associate something with red, colour becomes part of cognitive system ALL LANGUAGES HAVE 5 THINGS IN COMMON 1) a finite set of distinctive sounds used to make words and to convey various types of meaning its in the details ie jigsaw puzzles scattered into pieces languages are structured systems they have sounds, this is studied from phonology. - languages has phonological system a distinctive feature 2) Units that bear meaning of one kind or another known as words - units together have meaning. Just one is a sound. Sounds come together to make it meaningful - ie unfamiliarity UN FAM ILAR ARITY. Each has meaning - study of how we make words= Morphology 3) grammatical structure that is specific principles for making words and for putting them together to form larger units of meaning (known as sentences and texts) -syntax 4) strategies for using language in various personal and social ways (known as speech) -is there non linguistic activity? Yes, musical, drawing 5) resources for making new words and using language in new ways - semantics thus every language has phonology, morphology, syntasx, semantic and pragmatic LANGUAGE AND SPEECH (langue and parole) - You may know a language but you might not be able to speak it - founder of discipline is Fer
