CH2: Rockers, Hippies, and Geeks Intro  Revisit geeks and nerds, rockers and hippies  The youth that became part of the Beatle culture engaged in real rebellion –social, political, cultural  Rebellion was not socioeconomically motivated, was symbolic o Was about cutting the umbilical cord that society had maintained intact w teenagers at the time that kept them in a non-child-non-adult state  Teens of the 50s could identify w the many injustices and hypocritical attitudes that existing in the society of that era o Sex was kept hidden for example, esp from teens, even though it went on all the time o Confused and caused discomfort in teen’s feelings and emotions o Caused rebellion  Rebellion in the 50s was about carving out a new look, talk, walk o “cool lifestyle”  there was also a sense of moral consciousness –a need to make things right in the world Elvis Culture  Was called “Elvis the Pelvis” because he shook his hips in a sexually suggestive manner
