JAV132H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, I-Beam, Seagram Building
Document Summary
E. g. colosseum no columns in the middle. Unique relationship between necessary and unnecessary parts of the building. Designed by mies van der rohe, after he immigrated to north america in the second world war. Glass skyscraper, photo edited building, more of a fantasy. Germany didn"t have the technology at the time. Chrysler building, an example of traditional beaux-arts skyscrapers. Exposed steel, painted black, marble (limited material) somewhat minimalist. Bay - space between two load bearing columns. Get what you see, nothing is hidden . Clear structural logic, use of the grid. Spatial order determined by the structural order of the building. Similar to durand"s idea of having architecture organised on a grid and orthogonally. Universal space, space in between the columns. Walls within the space will only be partitioned walls, no structural logic. Hence the facade is a curtain wall, designed accordingly to the structure. No longer a need for the facade to carry any weight.
