February 11, 2013 – FAH272 Lecture Notes Coalbrookdale by Night, Phillip James de Loutherbourg, 1801 (painting) Rain, Steam and Speed, The great Western Railway, Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1844  New materials and building types from the industrial revolutions  Using iron as a new material, increased ability to span over large ravines and rivers  First use of iron in a building was in factories Flax Mill, Shrewsbury, England, 1796, Charles bage - World’s first completely iron frame building - Exterior still uses traditional materials - Openness and lightness in interior, due to use of iron posts inside - Factories were very susceptible for fire, iron was safer for this Palm House, Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, Decimus Burton and Richard Turner, 1845-47 - Need for protected space to grow plants - Practical use of iron and steel -
