AST201H-­‐  Stars  and  Galaxies         Professor  Michael  Reid                                                                                                                            Lecture  Notes     February  14,  2013   Lecture  12:  Types  of  Star     H-­‐R  Diagram   • Main  sequence  stars  are  burning  or  fusing  hydrogen  in  their  cores  –     o Main  sequence  stars  are  alive  and  are  generating  energy   • Sun  is  categorized  as  a  G2  star     • Dwarf  Stars  –  ALL  main  sequence  stars  –  even  though  dwarf  means  small,   these  stars  are  not     o White  Dwarfs  –  stars  that  are  about  the  size  of  the  Earth  –  no  longer   generate  energy   § Before  they  die,  they  generate  energy  like  the  Sun   o Giants    -­‐  stars  that  are  above  the  main  sequence   § These  names  do  reflect  the  sizes  and  die  very  quickly   • Luminosity  Class  –  has  NOTHING  to  do  with  luminosity     o Luminosity  classes  indicate  the  surface  pressure  of  a  star  and  where   the  stage  of  life  one  star  is  at  (tightly  correlated  with  the  evolutionary   state  of  a  star)   § I-­‐  Supergiant;  II-­‐  Brightgiant;  III-­‐  Giant;  IV-­‐  Subgiant;  V-­‐  Main
