Document Summary

Bio120 lecture 5 organismal reproductive diversity slide notes. Sexual: dioecious: has separate sexes (humans, hermaphrodite: having both male and female sexual characters. Parthenogenesis: the offspring are a result of non-sexual processes. In water fleas, (daphnia) different reproductive systems occur in different environments. Water hyacinth is a free floating plant on the water. Time and energy to find and attract mates: cloning is just growing. Investment in things like gametes, behaviour to attract, nectar if it is a flower. Risk of predation and infection: venereal diseases spread and they are often letting their guard down when mating, very vulnerable to predators. 50% less genetic transmission: when you clone, all your genes are going to the next generation. If you mate with someone else, your offspring genes will be affected by the other genes as well, not just yours, their genes may be worse than yours.
