Document Summary

Lecture 17: physiological ecology of plants: more tradeoffs. Stresses on plants are especially challenging because plants can"t evade stress by moving. Plants solve problems by growth & development, not behaviour, so carbon balance is central. Tradeoffs on photosynthesis: compromises involving 3 necessities: light, temperature, water. A lot of the desert is occupied by shrubby species. Photosynthetic bark on trunks & branches; can grow without incurring heat load & water loss through leaves. This plant is interesting in the fact that its rare that it has green trunk and branches. They catch light and because of this they don"t overheat. The small leaves are not going to heat up very often. ; can rid of heat and don"t heat up the leaves themselves are very tiny (microphylly) These small leaves are not going to heat up very often unlike alrger surface because they can get rid of heat via the environment (convection) and they just don"t get too much heat.
