Document Summary

Bio120 lecture 6 organismal reproductive diversity. One of the leading researchers on the evolution of sex. Belongs to our prof"s department at uoft. Did an experiment about sex: experimented on a planktonic freshwater animal. Was mystified by the concept of sex: many distant ancestors (bacteria, etc. ) only reproduced through asexuality. Darwin was doing inbreeding experiments in his greenhouse: one of his experiments lasted 10 years. For 10 years he self and cross pollinated morning glories: he studied 53 different species to make it general, found that in almost every species, inbreeding = inferior progeny. Darwin was motivated by this, wanted to find out how plants avoided inbreeding. Transmission advantage benefits of asexual and sexual reproduction. Imagine an outcrossing population of a hermaphroditic plant: 1 copy of the genes through the seed, 1 copy of the genes through the pollen, on average you disperse two gene copies (each plant has a mother and father)
