Bio 130 - lecture 4 - synthesis and structure of proteins. These structures are an important basis esp for changing of folding later in course. Last category of amino acids from last class. Cysteine is interesting bc side groups can make the bonds to stabilize the polypeptide. Can happen in a single polypep or bw other polypeps. Good for envirs that have strong physical or chemical forces. Proteins that make up skin and hair use these to hold it together from harsh envir. Strong, harsh chemical environments see these bonds too. These bridges can also act as a kind of switch to indicate activation/inactivation. The above chart will be given on evaluations - no need to memorize. These are amino acids (aa"s) that are coded by the codons (three-letters) to make proteins. If mrna has ccu then it"s likely going to be proline that"s produced. However there are some exceptions, as with everything.
