Document Summary
Low recombination = traits inherited as units (with adjacent genes) Impossible to do study with elephants (long gestation period and life span in general) Male fertility lasts longer, still active when their daughters mature. Elephants have evolved inbreeding avoi dance because inbreeding depression is strong. Elephants have not evolved avoidance, inbreeding depression is weak or male reproductive success is variable (so- me offspring is better than none. ) Use genetic markers to infer paternity using uniparentally inherited genes. Assess whether they are away from kin. Males displayed courting behavior and siring of offspring with non-kin or distant females. Observed in family groups, as well as via genetic markers. Strong inbreeding avoidance, inbreeding depression must be strong. Males fight with other males for partner (sometimes to no success) meaning no fitness is actually favored over inbreeding. North to south: tundra, taiga, boreal (little or no human interference in these habitats)
