Document Summary

~ 90% of our genes are shared between male and females. These shared genes are expressed differently in some ways. Most different is in gonads, some in other tissues like liver and brain. 50-90% of all genes in the fly show difference between sexes. In lectures, when refereeing to sexes, we meant biological sex, not gender or gender expression. Biological sex is determined by rearing temperature, not determined by chromosomes. Culture can be small or large portion of environmental influences. In fruit flies, culture is not a big contributor to their behaviors. In humans, culture plays an important role in contributing to human behaviors. Male birds exhibit bright colors, differences in their patterns of furs, etc. females. Male (on the right) dance to attract the female (on the left) But this should decrease male fitness: increase predation + unable to fly. Survival cost has been compensated with mating success. High mating success increased their fitness overall!
