Document Summary

Marsupials birth a very altricial baby who likewise moves from the womb to the pouch. During this time for a few months the baby nurses on the mother until it is fully grown. The fat composition of the milk likewise changes during this period. For marsupials there is little parental care from the males. There is a large number of herbivores among mammals, there are few among lizards and almost none among birds. True herbivores have specialized bacteria which ferment the cellulose material. Whales are one of the few true aquatic mammals, except that they are tied to the surface and must come up to breath. Hippos are semi-aquatic, and are very much related to whales. They are broken up into two groups based on morphology and ecology. These are the baleen whales and toothed whales. Hanging from the upper jaws are massive plates known as baleen fibres, comprised of thick keratinous material very similar to long and thick hair.
