Document Summary

Epithelial tissue - tissue in which cells are directly connected with minimal extracellular matrix beneath (ex: 60 % of our body, coats out organs, forms skin) Apical surface surface of epithalial tissue that faces the organ lumen or outside of the body. Basal surface surface of epithelial tissue that faces the underlying tissue. Basal lamina a layer of extracellular matrix secreted by the epithelial cells, on which the epithelium sits. Connective tissue tissue in which cells are dispersed with extracellular matrix providing overall structure (ex: bones, muscles, neurons, immune cells) Junctional complexes of epithelial cells: anchoring junctions, cell-cell anchoring junctions. Adherens junctions connect actin filament bundle in one cell with that in the next cell. Adherens junctins are iportant landmarks for epithelial polarity. Desmosome connect intermediate filaments in one to those in the next cell: cell-extracellular matrix junctions. Actin-linked adhesion anchors connect actin filaments in a cell to extracellular matrix.
