Document Summary
Extracellular matrix: specialized contents outside of the cell. Vacuole: can (1) act for storage or (2) act like lysosome; degradation. Cytoplasm: space outside the nucleus, includes organelles with exception of nucleus. Cytosol: aqueous part of cytoplasm, includes ribosomes and cytoskeleton, does not include organelles. Movement of proteins: within cell from different compartments, out of cell, into cell. During or after that, proteins must be sorted to the correct location. Protein sorting and protein synthesis: post-translational process, proteins fully synthesized in cytosol before sorting, unfolded: mitochondria, plastids, folded: nucleus, peroxisomes, co-translational process, endoplasmic reticulum (er, proteins with er signal sequence, associated with er during protein synthesis. Gated transport: folded proteins, goes both ways between cytosol and nucleus. Transmembrane transport: one way between cytosol and mitochondria/endoplasmic reticulum/plastids/peroxisomes: requires protein translocators. Bio230: lecture 9- protein sorting: vesicles move protein between compartments. Nuclear pore complex: selective transport of macromolecules (i. e. rna, proteins, free diffusion of small molecules (<5,000 daltons) (i. e. ions)
