Regulation of gene expression is crucial for: responses to extracellular stimuli, defining cell types. In eukaryotes, transcription initiation requires many different proteins known as general transcription factors. These factors are required by nearly all the promoters used by rna polymerase ii. Gene expression in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes regulated by gene regulatory proteins. These proteins bind to regulatory regions of the dna known as cis elements. A feature exclusive to prokaryotes is that multiple genes can be transcribed into a single rna molecule. The region of dna that transcribes for this is called an operon.
