Document Summary

Ch 17. 1 - 17. 7: problems 1, 3, 9, 11, 13. Recall the sources of carbohydrates and glucose --> monosaccharides start the pathway. When phosphocreatine levels fall, additional atp production is required. Glucose enters muscle cells from the blood using glut4 transporters. Glut4 has 12 transmembrane helices and forms a binding site for glucose transport. This receptor is used in muscle cells but glycolysis happens everywhere. Glucose provides a substrate for the glycolysis that will lead to atp production in muscle (and other cells). First phase is the first 5 steps: energy input phase --> put in energy to get more energy. Will have 2 molecules of gap in the end. Second phase is where we make more energy and generate atp and nadh: second 5 steps. We end up with 4 atp, 2 nadh. Pyruvate then enters mitochondria where there"s further oxidation, waste product formation, and lots of atp from oxidative phosphorylation.
