Problems: ch21 - 1 ; ch33 - 11. Final exam is 30% of your mark - 3 hours (see fas for schedule) Examine the cause of diabetes and why it is detrimental for the body. Review the hormonal regulation of the various pathways. When acetyl coa levels rise, we generate ketone bodies --> can be used for energy. We use excess acetyl coa for more energy. But acetyl coa is dep on oxaloacetate --> need to do something else if not enough. Fat reserves are a huge sour(cid:272)e of a(cid:272)etyl coa a(cid:374)d ge(cid:374)erate (cid:373)ore atp via -oxidation than glucose alone. Atkins diet is a diet that"s high in proteins, low in carbs. Lots of acetyl coa, but not enough oxaloacetate from glucose. Fat and amino acid catabolism occurs when epinephrine and glucagon (gpcr signalling) dominate (activation of certain enzymes). Acetyl coa enters the citric acid cycle but is limited by the amount of oxaloacetate present.
