Document Summary

Bioenergetics, proteins/enzymes, and metabolism: metabolism breaks down molecules and saves energy as atp, regeneration of atp by oxidative phosphorylation. Catabolism and anabolism are interrelated: metabolism is both breakdown and build up, catabolism is the breakdown of molecules, energy is released, store energy as atp and nadph, anabolism is the build up of molecules, energy is needed. Is organized by compartmentalization: can also be regulated. Pathways & regulation: enzymes may come together as a metabolism to help regulate, substrate availability, product inhibition, modification, covalent addition of molecules, allosteric regulation, protein expression & folding. Gibbs free energy and reactions: likes to go in the forward direction, this is a favourable reaction. In keq > 1, is negative, reaction is exergonic. In keq <1, is positive, reaction is endergonic. If keq= 1, =0, reaction is reversible: goes in forward direction but requires energy, unfavourable reaction, prefers the reverse direction, enzymes can be coupled favourable and unfavourable reactions to yield an overall favourable reaction.
