Document Summary

In epithelial cells they have a specific order. Tight junctions function as occluding junctions, they keep things on the proper sides. Tight junctions form sealing strands (tight junction belt). Basal to the tight junctions, there are adherence junctions, and adherence junctions are a type of anchoring junctions. Basal to that there is desmosomes, which are another type of anchoring ju(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374). They do(cid:374)"t seal all the region between the 2 cells, they only anchor the 2 cells together at specific locations. Gap junctions are channel forming junctions, they let the cells transfer materials between each cel. At the very bottom there is hemidesmosomes, which is kind of like half a desmosome anchored to the extra cellular matrix. Tight junctions are including junctions and they stop stuff from moving from one side to another of the cell. Tight junctions can prodive a bit of mechanical strength. If you prevent the formation of adherence junctions, tight junctions wont form.
