Q2. Work and State of Function (Medium)
Suppose 0.5 mol of He gas is present at 300 K with
outer pressure of 2.6 atm exerted on it.
A) How much work, in joules, is associated with its
expansion when pressure is lowered to 1.2 atm at
constant temperature?
B) Suppose that the pressure was lowered to 1.2 atm in
two steps. First the external pressure was reduced to 1.6
atm, then in the second step, we reduce the pressure to
1.2 atm. How much work is done using the two step
procedure? What can you conclude from comparing the
results from (a) with the results from this part?
