CHM247H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Vanillin, Infrared Spectroscopy, Sodium Borohydride
Document Summary
In this lab, vanillin was reduced with nabh4 to produce vanillyl alcohol. After isolation of the product, the melting point of __, nmr was used to verify the reaction. Vanillyl alcohol ( g) was produced during the experiment. Through infrared spectroscopy and taking melting point ranges (113. 4-115. 8 degree celsius) it was confirmed that vanillyl alcohol was obtained. The melting point was slightly lower indicating that there was some impurities present in the product. The starting material of the vanillin would show a slight oh peak around 3200cm-1 as well aw a strong carbonyl peak around 1700cm-1 on the ir spectrum.
