Document Summary

Narrative: a chain of events linked by cause and effect and occurring in time and space. Beginning / middle / end equilibrium / disequilibrium / equilibrium. Not the same equilibrium as the beginning, because the narrative has changed and experienced. Creates a sense of balance, resolve the problems and con icts. Story is the entire narrative of the lm, incorporating both those vents which are actually depicted on screen and those which we infer as having occurred. Plot, in contrast, is the ordering and presentation of those events as they occur in the lm. Diegesis refers to the world of the story (everything the characters can see and hear) Non-diegesis refers to elements outside the story world. Plot: explicitly presented event + additional non-diegetic material. Narrative time is governed by three variables: order, duration, and frequency. These three variables often account for differences between plot and story. Narration is the process by which plot presents story information to the viewer.
