CIN LECTURE 15: RADICAL FILM
We can dispute against concepts based on our own personal interpretations
Film study that is purely POLITICAL in nature
We explore the relationship between film and cultural politics
DOCUMENTARIES are often political, such as “Roger and Me”
“Lincoln”, the biographical film, can also be a political film
“every film is political, as it is determined by the ideology which produces it” (or
within which it is produced, which stems from the same thing) Jean Luc Comelli
“ideology is an internalized image of one’s place within all of the social dynamics
related to power and hierarchy” –Bill Nichols
Classical Film Classicism
Art Film Modernism
Radical Film Political Modernism
Postmodern Film Postmodernism
We all follow social constructs that are elevated by ideology
It may not be “true”, but simply socially defined
We have a world view grounded in HEDONISM (a key example of ideology is valuing
hard work, otherwise known as DOMINANT IDEOLOGY)
These ideas can be traced back to Louis Althusser
A French Marxist philosopher who argued that the system in the 1960’s is
perpetuated through the workings of two types of institutions
REPRESSIVE STATE APPARATUSES ensure compliance, political/legal
systems, threaten and spread fear, state run things
&
IDEOLOGICAL STATE APPARATUSES (schools, family, churches, the
media), private institutions, perpetuates the acceptable ideas and behaviour,
justifies social system
Capitalism only benefits capitalists, the workers fuelling a system that doesn’t benefit
them
So, why does the working class still contribute?
Althusser claims that we are stuck in this system through politics, the law, and ideology
RSA = fear and threats
ISA = subtle cohesion (more effective and abstract)
If you control these things, you have people docile
The ISA’s work from the inside out, EMOTIONAL CONDITIONING
“in a class society ideology is the relay whereby, and the element in which, the
relationship between man and their conditions of existence is settled to the profit
of the ruling class” –Louis Althusser
they essentially blame social complacency on ideology
so many people were going to movies, they were a grand influence, assisting in the
maintenance of a status quo
this is why they say all films are political, regardless of content, because it reinforces
DOMINANT IDEOLOGY
reality is nothing but an expression of prevailing ideology
