CIN LECTURE 13: CLASSICAL FILM
• Back to Film Form…Film form is the narrative or non-narrative system ((narrative,
rhetorical, categorical, associational, abstract)
• As well, the stylistic system (primary techniques ad interactions, identifying patterns and
functions, etc.)

Formal analysis is the only way we study cinema

Extra-Textual/Inter-Textual Features:
• Extra-Textual = Extra to the text
THE FILM
EXTRA-TEXTUAL = DVD Materials, Publicity, Reviews, Analysis, SOCIAL
REALITY
INTER-TEXTUAL = Another Film
Ex. “Scary Movie”, “Scream”
• There is also Textual, to do with the film itself
• Extra-Textual includes publicity, etc.
• Avant-Garde is a critical cinema
• Politics, cultural issues, etc. affect what is known as NATIONAL CINEMA
The Classical Film:
• The Classical Film derives from Classical Hollywood Cinema
• Classic vs. Classical (not the same) Classic = status as a masterwork, Classical –
referring to mode of production (derives primarily from Classical Hollywood golden
studio era circa 1920’s-1950’s)
• Not exclusively connected to Hollywood as the Hollywood style pervaded the
International Marketplace
