CIN LECTURE 24: FILM & MEDIA
FLASHBACK A film’s stylistic system is defined by the patterned use of medium-
specific elements
How cinema in our contemporary (historical) moment compares o the way cinema has
previously been understood, critically
Has undergone a big shift in recent decades
Cinema is a very young art form, just over 100 years old
However, over those 100 years there have been huge shifts which have evolved
the medium
Lumière brothers “actualities”/ “things happening now” = birth of cinema
(although it is a little more complex than this, because prior to this date of
exhibition on Christmas of 1895, there was a lot of experimentation with moving
images and pictures)
Some earliest forms of moving pictures include the CHRONOGRAPHIC SERIES
by Eadward Meybridge and the ZOETROPE, magic lantern shows (all the
manipulation of still images, more like an illusion of movement than natural
movement)
Cinema at the intersection of invention and innovation those of
PHOTOGRAPHY and PROJECTION
As well, by extension, film has been defined in the present by its physical
properties and the way it is consumed
However, the introduction of digital technologies has undermined both of these
defining attributes
Now, images are transformed into binary codes/information (encoded as a piece
of digital script) HUGE CHANGES IN CAMERAS
The means by which film has consumed have also changed quite radically
Now, films are being communicated through so many mediums simultaneously
Ex. Batman backpacks, shoes, Lego blocks, fan parodies, magazines, cartoons,
posters, etc.
Media convergence is being explored, as the culture today is a mix of a ton of
medias, cross-platforms (and there is an increased capability for viewers to
participate in those media forms)
“By convergence, I mean the flow of content across multiple media platforms, the
cooperation between, multiple media industries, and the migratory behaviour of
media audiences who would go almost anywhere in search of the kinds of
entertainment experiences they wanted. Convergence is a word that manages to
describe technological, industrial, cultural, and social changes…”
From “The End of Cinema: Multimedia and Technological Change “As this
millennium draws to an end, the cinemaa popular form of entertainmenthas
been dramatically transformed. It has become embedded inor perhaps lost in
the new technologies that surround it…the movie screen, the home television
screen, and the computer screens retain their separate locations, yet the types of
images you see on each of them are losing their medium-based specificity.” –
