Document Summary
Stylistic elements that don"t follow the narrative/stylistic decisions that are not subordinated to narrative. Avant-garde cinema allows you to see the world in a way we don"t typically see or experience. Conventional narrative cinema normal way we see the world. Avant-garde allow us to experience the same world anew. Defining avant-garde in terms of two features: avant-garde films are defined by the circumstances surrounding their production, circulation, and reception. An artisanal mode of production: made by a single artist, cannot support a large cast and crew (not heavily financed). The filmmakers understand themselves as artists; goal is the need for complete creative control over their work (expression of individuality). Circulation: distribution and exhibition outside of commercial contexts, limited to specialized events and spaces, non commercial. Most rejected convention: cinema is a storytelling media (even though they could be narrative) (down).
