CIN201Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Soviet Montage Theory
Feb. 3, 2017
CIN201 TUTORIAL 2.4
• A photo is an index because in order to get the image of the thing, it had to be physically
there for the light to bounce off of—causing a chemical reaction—at some point in time
• Bazin
- photography is real because, unlike painting, it doesn’t require human intervention
(he prefers a realist aesthetic)
- Solution to problem of sound faith in the image (plastics cinematography and
mise-en-scène) and faith in reality (long take, deep focus/staging, fluid camera
movement)
Ex. Flaherty, Murnau, von Stroheim
- Opposed to Soviet Montage because it imposes an interpretation on the viewer
- Sees the real operating in Jean Renoir’s films
“Rules of the Game” (1939) FILM:
• Parodies French High Society (French government banned it)
• Film is somewhat ridiculous
• The house they all move to is like a microcosm of society everyone knows the rules
except the two in the position of power (and when the guy shoots the famous pilot, they
brush it off as though he thought he was shooting a poacher to maintain appearances)
• Style in relation to Bazin
- There’s always activity happening outside/beyond the frame
