CLASS 7
Class 6 Screening of The Godfather
The New Hollywood: An Underground Corporation
- These films are about doing things differently
- Making movies in a different, new way
McCabe and Mrs. Miller: A Revisionist Western
- “a hippie Western” (referred to as such, especially during the period)
- it’s marked by an alignment with the counterculture – how?
Method of production (the film’s production internalizes aspects of the
counterculture)
The production of the film repeats the same commune-like dynamic (creates a
social space that parallels the counterculture social space)
Its themes (new social spaces, anti-establishment, anti-corporate)
Ex. everyone seems to be working towards a common goal in the brothel (how to
do business differently – it is really a utopian venture)
Its revisionist genre
The Western Hero
- Types Frontiersman, Federal marshal, Town sheriff, Outlaw
- Characteristics Moral integrity, physical strength, superior abilities
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
- McCabe
witticism, anecdotes meant to ingratiate him, is talkative rather than silent (and
sometimes seems to be talking to himself)
he appears inept at times and often cannot deal with his competitors
he is not a representative of the law nor if he an outlaw
tinhorn gambler
itinerant entrepreneur
he exploits the labour of others (someone else has to build his brothel, his
bathhouse, etc.)
- Mrs. Miller
her name is in the title, they are equals in business but she also appears smarter
than him in the film
although she is not as educated she is shrewd
the film points out that she is able to stand up to McCabe (they present it with her
eating a lot while McCabe drinks an egg and he is almost frightened of her)
it is clear that she is still going to be a victim because McCabe will make her a
captive as she is still dependent on being a prostitute
her fate depends on McCabe being able to negotiate his way through the issues
with the mining company
