Documentaries don"t have a fixed internal composition. Nichols docs are fictions unlike any other fictions. They attempt to understand a shared social reality . Docs are invariably engaged with the historical world. They give tangible representation to a world we already inhabit and share. It is clear what each documentary wants to address (2) purpose. Docs can entertain, but they often have other purposes. They assert and argue, and viewers are meant to evaluate these claims. They share knowledge with viewers (3) style. Docs put a recognizable world on view . Film and video cameras record with a high degree of representational fidelity. But docs provide a creative treatment of actuality (grierson) Style always mediates our understanding of the world. Docs are comprised of images and sounds; we still have to interpret and assess them (4) production methods. Docs: small crews, non-actors ( social actors ), small budgets. Typically shot on location, w/ available light, on the fly .
