Document Summary

Week 2: touchstone the 1980s: the late 1980s was the era of the muscleman, bodybuilder hero movies. Actors in these movies were not actors before (for e. g. , schwarzenegger was a bodybuilder): pe(cid:272)ta(cid:272)le gai(cid:374)ed i(cid:373)porta(cid:374)(cid:272)e i(cid:374) holly(cid:449)ood after the (cid:858)(cid:1009)0s a(cid:374)d (cid:858)(cid:1010)0s. Consumption of films was shifting towards being home-based: 2 types of spectacle: wide image (seen in older movies), and impact aesthetic (use of rapid editing: many shots in small time, and expanded camera mobility). Hostile and closed spaces allow for action sequences: before rambo, action films were cheap (low budget for actors and sets). Rambo was high-budget which led to it being very successful: rambo was not a studio movie, rather an independent production (made by immigrants to america, outsiders to hollywood). Schwarzenegger: films involve posing stars in front of camera. Muscular bodies are a form of spectacle themselves: feminist theory: women are to be looked at in movies, men drive narrative and are involved in emotion and action.
