A narrational mode is a historically defined set of norms of narrational construction and comprehension. The more we see something, the more an element recurs across films, the more we recognize and internalize its functions. Intrinsic forms: these are given norms within the film itself. Extrinsic norms are patterns set by a set of films. Stylistically, norms can also represent a set of bounded alternatives. Conventions are practices that are shared by a group within an art world. Intrinsic norms can be modified in a film, the narration can deviate. Ex. horror movie tracking shots from the killer"s point of view. Film style is a part of a tradition of critical analysis it has a history connected to other disciplines: musicology, linguistics, semiotics, and art history. Style is the produce of practical compositional problems to which artists develop skilled solutions.
