Last four weeks emphasizing the textual: film text has an outside and its engagement with other related phenomena (hollywood) Genre emphasizes the intertextual: make connections/areas of overlap from across many works. (phenomena: other film texts). Associate the genre by its rules and conventions it is known for and cannot be reduced to just one film. It is not restricted to hollywood influenced film production internationally and continued to persist film production in north america and beyond. Genre: a grouping of films that posses some common set of characteristics. Share a deep structure: rules and conventions that render certain films a western, musical etc. In order to choose the rep films to survey in search of connection and overlap we need to have a working definition of the genre. Common cultural consensus: regarding definition of genre as a starting point for analysis. Genre is what we collectively believe it to be. Film would be universally recognized as such in our culture.
