Document Summary

Used to remove organic matter from wastewater - can use for nitrification (convert ammonia to nitrate) Ex: trickling filters, rotating biological contactors (rbcs), moving bed biological. Trickling filter - not really a filter (not fully immersed - allows for aerobic processes) Wastewater spread on surface of media (stone or plastic - depth 1 m to 12: supporting biological growth - water trickles through porous media that has biofilm on it. Issues: when biofilm builds up, particles can shear off. Engineered material - plastic barrel shape (hollow) with ribs stemming from middle. Biofilm: community of bacteria attached to a surface ~ 1 mm thick (usually protected by extracellular polysaccharides) - can tolerate changing condition quite well. Need to avoid flooding the bed to ensure that processes remain aerobic. Also need to avoid adding substrate at a rate causing too much biofilm growth - and growth of plants (not proven to be detrimental to performance)
