Who: which greeks and romans: elite because most of surviving literature were written by elites, art consumers. Women + poor perceived through their perspective: not necessarily based on nation-state/nationality by geography. Roman and greek empires meant that colonists moved out; yet remained. What: combination of art, literature, archaeology, etc, focus on literature. Difficult to produce and preserve (e. g. papyrus) Values, ideals, mentality of ancient greeks + romans. Greece part of aegean sea colonized all around: turkey, black sea. Trade, interaction around mediterranean importation of wood, precious metal, stones (phoenicia, syria) art, architecture, literature: two important facts.
