At the center of every household in athens there is a man, a citizen, and the oikos is his support system. Even slaves and animals are part of the oikos, including the house and all the land owned by the owner, and his immovable accessories. In this play its about how to manage the relationships in the oikos. Oikonomikos is the root for our word economics. The oikos can be seen as a separate sphere of action, different from the action of the polis. The conflict in antigone can be seen as differences between the oikos and the polis. The comedy texts we have now were written for performance. After the suppression of the full democracy in athens at 322, the comic plays that are being written/performed in athens changed in nature.
