They couldn"t speak in the assembly or serve in office. Considered life-long minors, always under the care of a man. Woman"s contribution to the state was to produce citizen sons: foreigners, exclusions to democracy, slaves were held by athenians. Athens was a thriving metropolis, lots of trade and art.
