Several important roots: hodos = road/way,
hemera = day, haima = blood, derma = skin,
demos = people, graphein = to write
1. a- or an- (before vowel) = not or without,
e.g. atom, anesthetic, atheist
2. amphi- ampho(tero)- = on both sides (cf. L. ambi- p 69),
e.g. amphibious, amphoteric
3. ana = up (2nd -a lost before a vowel),
(opposite of kata) derived meaning: back, again,
e.g. analysis, anabatic, anode, anion
4. anti = against, e.g. antidote, antiseptic (cf. L. contra)
5. apo (apoh- = aph-) = (away) from,
e.g. apostasy, aphelion, apology
6. arche better as noun = beginning p 152
7. cata = (2nd -a lost before a vowel),
catah- = cath- down, opposite of ana-
e.g. catabatic, cathode, cation
8. di- = twice, double, e.g. diatomic (cf. L. bi- p 69)
10. dicha- = in two, asunder, e.g. dichotomy
9. dia = through, e.g. diameter, dia/tom, but cf. di/a/tom/ic
