Ancient sources tell us that one of the reasons tyrants were despised by aristocrats is that they liked to tax people. In sparta, we only really know of a single tax. Had to contribute a certain amount of grain to the central messes. On the other hand, in peisistratid athens, the large population enjoys rights that are certainly greater than those who lived in oligarchs.
