The Oracles
Riddles, high chance of misinterpretation
Oracles can go wrong: 1) dont understand at all; 2) Understand but try to prevent
The Oracles are never wrong to the Greeks
Meden agan (Nothing in excess); gnothi scauton (Know yourself)
Know yourself know you are human and that your knowledge is limited; must rely
on the gods
Oedipus the King (Summary)
Laius marries Jocasta; a child is born (despite Laius receiving oracle that his son
will kill him); exposes the baby
The child is later adopted by Corinthians Polybus and Merope; grows up and finds
out he is adopted
Goes to Delphi and is told that he will kill his father and marry his mother
Leaves Corinth, on the way to Thebes, bumps into old man and kills all but one
servant
Encounters Sphinx outside of Thebes; solves riddle and Sphinx dies; Thebes makes
Oedipus king and marry Jocasta
Later a plague and when the play begins
Why is there a plague and who brings the news = king has been killed (miasma);
Creon (Jocastas brother)
There is a plague because the killer of Laius has not been found
3rd ep: Jocastas child exposed; Laius killed where three roads meet; right before
Oedipus came to Thebes; Laius’ description; only one man attacked?
4th ep: messenger reports Polybus death
