Now the army are roman citizens rather than romans in the geographical sense. Rough countrymen and strangers to rome: caesar leads recently enfranchised gauls, crassus leads an army of southern italians, pompey leads an army of father"s clients. This army remains, though, an army of citizens. They can be greedy and violent, but they are not interested in a military coup and martial law. It is used as such by members of the traditional political classes. They become detached from and are against the rest of the citizens.
