Cicero
-typical story of economic and class struggle
-senate looks to him to save them from crisis state
-his solution: executions (but you can’t do this without a trial)
-Clodius dresses up as woman and attends Bona Dea Festival (only for wmen), he gets
caught and Cicero has him charged
-later bribes the jury and gets off
-during 40’s, writes most of his important philosophical works
-tries to make a come-back after Caesar’s assassination
-interesting parallels to Cato
-new man: invented a certain version of “being Roman”
-master of the media
-Ciceronianism: his rhetorical texts get integrated into educational curriculum
-Cicero was one of the key players in starting Latin philosophy (not just translations from
Greek)
On Behalf of Caelius
-Caelius prosecutes Cicero’s colleague Antonius, now Cicero is defending Caelius
-Clodia (the crux of the defense): generally known as a notorious whore
-see a progressive amount of female emancipation in her life
-Cicero really has a beef with Clodia’s lifestyle, other people probably didn’t have a
problem with her
-to restore Caelius, he wants to exile Clodia
-not all of his charges are really relevant in the courts (see first 3)
-Cicero really concerned with the “moral charges of the case
-engages in character defenses more so than he addresses the actually charges as
they fall under the letter of the law
-wants to show how Caelius is a “good Roman”
-Catiline (revolutionary figure) is the prosecutor
-rhetorical challenge: turning a boy into a man, making is indiscretions out to be mere
youthful fun”
-attack on Caelius is that he’s a “bad guy” (of poor moral character)
-Cicero is trying to show that he is a good guy and that he will become a leading citizen
-indulges the “boys will be boys defense (sewing wild oats, etc.)
-idea that you somehow haven’t lived properly if you haven’t explored in your
youth
-double standard: not the same for upstanding women
-not allowed to have fun
-boys have fun with prostitutes, slaves and other debased women
