Religion  Lecture Topics: • Older religious traditions • Greek and roman gods • Non Greco­Roman Gods in Roman Religion Religions of the empire • Romans remained fascinated with greek culture • Adapted greek culture • Remained all traditions  • Well aware of Olympian Greek gods and made roman versions  • Public festivals were so important in greek culture, sports, public holidays also  very common in roman world • Divination of rulers­ the cult of emperor turned into divinities after their death • Also the emperors were happy encourage the worship of themselves • This phenomena began in Hellenistic period the Hellenistic monarchs • Cult worship (not negative ) – smaller set whose interested in major or minor  divinities  • Interested in gathering together and performing rituals and ceremonies  • Making up their own divinities  • Outside city • Interesting terms:  • Letter from the pliny the younger writing to the emperor Trajan: context: •  Pliny as administrator of policy about the Christians. He believes its an exotic  cult coming from the east • traditional romans believe cult are weird they use the term superstition­ excessive,  obsessive, belief  • Christian terms: pagans – has negative connotation as well  • In its origin, pagan refers to people of the hills (country bumpkins)  • Christianity came state religion  • Became urban event not perferial event • Syncretism­correspondences between Greek and roman mythology • Zeus vs. Jupiter (indo European connection­ Jupiter arose in the Italian peninusula  independently of Zeus  • Same thing with religion and culture – Indo­European tradition • Jupiter – Zeus Pater  • Roman retold all greek myths would use their gods instead of greek gods • Because they believed they were the same “synchronized”  Non­Greco roman Religion  • Isis­ Egyptian goddess  • Gree
