Polis was the interest of citizens who called themselves athenians. Full participate or citizenship, and its privileges are carefully guarded and often narrowly restricted. Public participation usually limited to adult males with proven ties to the community, traditionally signaled by ownership of land. Women: generally excluded from public participation (eg voting), legally under head of male household, important in managing oikos. Some features commonly shared by archaic greek poleis: Often (but not necessarily) include a density inhabited site with defensive walls, frequently close to an arkopolis (a high city) A central public space, the agora (civic space) Polis region: temples and sacred precincts dedicated to cults and public rituals densly interconnected with the polis. Homeric poems, by late archaic periods, were known all over the polis, all knew homer. Mythical material showing homeric stories circulated on pots/pottery. Athletics and symposium ? polis were isolationists by nature: xenephobes and hostile. Tension between rich and poor doesn?t go away.
