If the males had enough land, they would be part of the army, but only some would be called upon when they went to war. The romans often did badly in battles, but the romans culd always get more soldiers. The soldiers were very loyal to their legions. The roman army was divided into legions which was further divided into subunits, but everyone was trained and disciplined the same way. The idea was that anyone could be substituted with anyone else. In hellinistic warfare, number of men and a good leader would be the winning army. In the roman warfare, they would win because the soldiers are well disciplined and loyal.
