September 27 Greek culture- lecture 6 o Dionysus worship can be terrifying or liberating experience; and if your standing outside yourself, where are you? o Dionysus relationship with theater; drawn into another way; and can lose yourself in the movie – mimesis (an imitation of reality) o The Greeks were interested in mimesis- statues, imitation of the human body etc. o Tragedy is the mimesis of an action; how does it have the ability to blur these lines o Agave; she thinks she is a great hunter (lion), but really it is her son. o Dionysus is presenting to be human- but Pentesus thinks it is reality; also the actors “being” these Gods on stage o Metatheatrical; calls attention to its own status; keeps reminding you o This play has costumes, spectators (Penthesus to the mountain), or when he dresses as a bacchant; but Penthesus startst to be come the charater “is my hair in the right place”, “is the hem at the back correct” o Penthesus thinks he is going to the moutntain as a spectator, but he gets drawn into the show, he them imitates and then becomes an animal (losses his humanity) o Agave could be holding Penthesus mask- metatheatrical ; what are you actually seeing o Allegory for theater itself- blurred line of reality; that’s their characters (not the actors) o Another layer to mimesis- who are the bacchants? Men dressed as women, but isn’t Penethsus as well?  o This performance like before is terrifying and exciting; very dramatic experience o Penthesus starts to see double- and Dionysus says, “That’s the way you should be seeing”. The audience starts to see the madness o If there is music playing, and you start to tap your toe, when you are worshiping Dionysus through dance, through mimesis, and becoming a bacchant o City dionysisa, aka the greater dionysia, (in Athens) 3 day festival in the spring, each day there would be 3 tragedies a day and a satyr play; was civic festival o Open air stadium; holding 9-15000 citizens (men present, women maybe) o Playwrights were chosen by a citizen group of judges, and wealthy citizens paid through their taxes o Choruses were made up by average citizens and the government would help
