CLA232H1S ThucydidesAthensClassical period Today we will be putting a direct spotlight on Athens and see what it superior against other city statesAthens is the polis and is in a geographical region known as Attica The Area of Attica has been inhabited since the Mycaenaen age and it is reflected in Athenian myths because the Athenians thought of themselves as born from the very soil of Attica greek word for this kind of myth known as Autochhony refers to myths of people who are born from the land We Athenians are Authochony born from the very earth itselfThe God of blacksmiths and crats fell in love with Athena who is the patron goddess of Athens Athena is a virgin God she does not sleep with anyone When this God came onto her she ran away He prematurely ejaculated From that soil came Enrichthonios A Mythical Autochthony offersfollowsExtreme attachment wouldnt want to move away from the land would want to stay on the land and fight for it Makes them feel superior and exceptional to foreigners who would never have the same qualities Foreigners not accepted as citizens For an Athenian if you lived there your whole life fought wars such you could not become a citizenTwo parents need to be autochrothony for the child to beYour fellow citizens are like your family sense of equality Athenians attitudes towards women seems like they are not necessary because we are born from a virgin Goddess Athenian women are put in a less prominent position Athens in the classical period was a democracy but that had not always been the caseClassical period was a period of great revitalization thAthens was a city of great aristocracties and was ruled up until 6 cenutyr by a tyrantIn 510 BCE Athenian democracy was established and this was a slow processElements of Athenian DemocracyDirectradical democracy there is no distance at all between the people and the government The people are the government and all decisions are made directly by the people Every political decision made in Athens is made by an assembly of Athenian citizens in which they sit there on the side of the Acropolis and vote Every citizen gets to hold political office in a direct democracy Athenians every single office with the exception of the general was chosen by picking name out of a hat so that every citizen had a chance Every citizen could sit on the council and participated directly in the democracy It was a true government of the peopleAuthority or sovereignty of the demos leaders demokratiathOn one hand there are the alletes Now in the 5 century they no longer have their power In the shift the old allete felt disenfranchised and for them they had a different slight on the demokratia When an aristocratic author uses Demos tehres a sneer tone to it What they wanted instead was an aristokratia wanted the best people who they assumed was them Women and slaves could not votePotential for kinship within the democracy Funeral oration reflects and mediates this tension
